The AR Book Scale is a tool used by teachers and students to assist in book selection by reading level. The AR scale is short for "Accelerated Reader" created by the Renaissance Learning Company. Many publishers now have a "Level Reading" scale. However, each publisher has its own way of identifying the book level while the AR scale uses a consistent rubric for vocabulary, comprehension, and interest level. The AR scale can be used as a guide for parents when assisting their child in choosing books. Parents can start to recognize the book level that is easy for independent reading and little to no struggle with word identification and text meaning. Then, the parent can select books at a slightly higher level that the student may need a bit of help but will be an appropriate challenge for independent reading and/or buddy reading. Books written at an even higher level can be great "read together" books for further enjoyment of literature and reading growth.
When possible, I will include the AR level of books I share. Remember that a second grader can enjoy an AR book level of 4.2, not just books with a 2.0 scale. For books I don't list on this blog, the AR level of thousands of titles can be found at www.arbookfind.com.
